P.E.G. Artsy Ella

Wednesday, 12 October 2011

We met Ella in New Hampshire at the Sqaum Art Fair last month.  What initially caught our eye was her beautiful booth and artwork.  We then learned that the artist was Artsy Ella, a middle schooler who lives in New Hampshire.   Blown away by her work and her age, we stopped and asked her a few questions. What Ella shared with us was nothing short of extraordinary.  We immediately knew that Artsy Ella would be our very first P.E.G. (Pretty.Extraordinary.Girl) featured on the blog.

Artist Story

Ella has always been creative. When she was younger, she would spend time mostly drawing and sketching. Her mother told us that for years, Ella has fashioned an entire wardrobe for her gecko lizard named Crocky. Art and creativity projects were always considered something fun for Ella to do in her spare time.

That changed in 2006 when Ella’s family home was destroyed by a fire. She shared the following about that experience. “The fire changed my life”, Ella said. “After the fire, I could see things differently…as an artist”.

It was after the fire that Ella felt the urge to try something different. Her Aunt, also an artist, would work with her on all sorts of art techniques. Working with her aunt helped Ella realize that art was something that always made her feel happy. She gained the confidence to start painting on her own.

Many of Ella’s works are painted on salvaged items from her family home that burned. Doors and cabinets saved from the house serve as her canvas. She uses acrylic and spray paint for different effects.

“I paint whenever I have free time. Before school, after school, and Sundays. Saturday gives me time to think about what I can paint while spending time with my family”, Ella shared.

Ella dreams of attending Savannah College of Art & Design when she goes to college in a few years.

In the mean time, she is a hard working student, and is building a creative business selling her work at local art shows.

Ella is also in the midst of launching her own website,
Artsy Ella Studio.

Ella demonstrates so many qualities that we think make a girl extraordinary.  Ella is following her passion, dreaming big, and staying creative.  She certainly demonstrates tenacity and the ability to work hard. Way to go Ella! We wish you the best in your creative career!

Hi Ella :) I was attending Squam this year and also had a booth at the Art Fair. I had a chance to come by your booth and was so impressed with your work. I love that you paint on salvaged doors, etc. and was so thrilled to see someone of your age putting her work out into the world and being generous enough to share it with people. Enjoy your work and thank you!
